ghosting / dating apps / ghosted day of the date
I came back to Tinder after some time away and actually got somewhere. Matches turned into conversations. Conversations turned into plans.
The first date was set for a Thursday evening. We'd been talking for about a week. The messages felt normal—nothing awkward, nothing forced. The day arrived.
Silence.
I figured it was a fluke. Dating apps are full of flaky people. I moved on.
The second match suggested we exchange numbers. That felt like a good sign—people don't usually give out their real number if they're not serious. We set a date for the following weekend.
The day came. Nothing.
By the third time, I started paying closer attention. I tried scheduling dates sooner after matching, thinking maybe the gap between "let's meet" and the actual day was killing the momentum. It didn't help.
The fourth match, I stayed in touch leading up to the date. Light conversation, nothing heavy, just enough to keep things warm. We confirmed the night before.
Ghosted day of the date.
After the fifth one disappeared, I went back through the message threads. I read them like I was looking for clues. Was I too formal? Not flirtatious enough? Was I texting too much before we met, or not enough?
I'm a single parent with a work schedule that doesn't bend easily. I can't always do same-day or next-day meetups. Some people said that was probably the problem—that dates scheduled too far out lose steam, that the other person finds someone else or just loses interest in the meantime.
But I also saw people argue the opposite. If you schedule a first date with a stranger from a dating app and then go quiet for days, they assume you're not interested anymore. They think the date isn't really happening.
The sixth match moved to texting. We picked a place, a time. The conversation was good. I thought this one would actually happen.
It didn't.
Six dates in two months. Six day-of disappearances. Not one of them made it to the actual meeting.
After the first ghosting, I blamed the match. After six, I started wondering what I was doing wrong. Was it something in how I texted? The timing? Some pattern I couldn't see but they could?
I still don't know if there's one reason or six different ones. Whether it's my tone, the scheduling gap, or just the reality of dating apps where people vanish without explanation.
What I took from it
Ghosting on dating apps can happen for many reasons, often unrelated to you. The pattern may reflect the unpredictability of online dating rather than a flaw in your approach. Exploring different communication styles or timing might help, but it's not all within your control.
