boyfriend jealous of my success
He pursued me hard when we were undergraduates. He made it clear he wanted to be with me, put in the effort, seemed motivated by exactly who I was.
Once we were together, something shifted.
My grades were stronger than his. My LSAT score was higher. I was preparing for law school, and these facts became points of comparison in a way I hadn't expected.
He seemed threatened by it. Jealous, maybe, though I was reading his reactions and I knew that. What I could observe directly was the way achievement became competitive between us instead of something he celebrated.
He had chosen me knowing I was ambitious and academically successful. That was the confusing part. He pursued someone high-achieving, then appeared to resent the qualities that made me that way.
The second pattern was harder to dismiss because it was concrete.
We would go out to dinner and he would say he had forgotten his wallet. Once, that's an accident. Twice, you start to notice. By the third and fourth time, it was a pattern. I kept paying.
Each time it happened, I felt the irritation build. Not just about the money itself, but about what it meant that this kept happening. Was he shifting financial responsibility onto me deliberately? Was it carelessness? Did he expect me to cover things because I could, or because he thought I should?
I didn't know. I knew what I observed: the repeated forgotten wallet. I knew what I inferred: that he resented my success and maybe this was connected, another way of making me pay for being ahead.
The two patterns sat together in my mind. The comparison around grades and test scores. The dinners that ended with my credit card. I started questioning what I was seeing. Whether I was reading too much into it or not enough.
He had wanted to be with someone impressive. Then, once he was, he seemed to compete with her achievements and repeatedly left her covering the bill.
I took both seriously. The jealousy I was reading in his behavior. The forgotten wallet I was observing directly. I kept both separate, and I kept both.
What I took from it
It's possible he felt insecure about our differences and didn't know how to handle it. His forgotten wallet might have been a pattern of avoidance rather than intention. Recognizing these patterns can help clarify what I want in a relationship.
