why is my friend ignoring me

We used to hang out all day long, stuck to each other like glue. In high school, it felt like we were brothers—inseparable, always together. For a while, it was just assumed: wherever he was, I was there too. That’s how it went, day after day.

Then things changed, and it happened fast. My best friend started spending time with a new group, the kind of people who were more popular and social than I’d ever been. Suddenly, he wasn’t around anymore. He stopped hanging out with me. He ignored me, acted like I didn’t exist at all. It was as if I’d disappeared from his world.

I didn’t know why at first. The shift was abrupt—one day we were close, the next it was like I’d never mattered. Just distance.

At some point, I found out what had changed. I learned that his new friends didn’t like me. They thought I was cringe and weird. Maybe it’s because I’m more introverted, not the social type. I can see how I’d come off that way, but hearing that was still a blow.

Being left out like that, replaced by someone I’d trusted most, destroyed me. It hurt more than my first breakup. I didn’t expect that kind of pain from a friendship.

Afterward, I made myself a promise. I swore to myself that I wouldn’t let it happen again. If someone starts to ignore me, they’re dead to me—I cut them off right away. I don’t give anyone the chance to make me feel invisible like that again.

That’s what changed. I haven’t tried to fix things with him, and I don’t plan to. The rule is simple now: if someone ignores me, I’m done. That’s how I handle things, and I keep that promise to myself.

What I took from it

The loss of a friendship that felt like family is deeply painful. It's possible your friend was swayed by social pressures or reasons unknown to you. While this hurt is real, it doesn't determine your ability to form meaningful connections in the future.
